At my favorite Japanese sake bar’s 1st anniversary event, I finally got to try “AKABU Gokujo no Kire” — a bottle I had been dreaming about for a long time. And best of all, it was served at a special discount price for that night only! Getting to drink such a premium sake at this kind of occasion felt like a real treat.
A Gorgeous Aroma Right from the Pour
The moment it was poured into the glass, a fruity aroma of apple and pear floated up gently. There was a hint of tropical character too — vibrant yet refined. Even before taking a sip, the anticipation was already building.
Tasting Notes
The first sip brought a soft sweetness and rich umami that spread across the palate, then faded away cleanly and beautifully. That elegant finish is exactly what the name “Kire” (meaning “a clean cut”) promises. A perfectly balanced sake — refined and clear, yet with satisfying depth.
Food Pairing
That evening the food was mostly meat dishes, which made me wonder how a fruity junmai daiginjo would pair. Surprisingly, it worked beautifully — the sake didn’t overpower the meat’s umami at all, and instead cleansed the palate after each bite. I kept reaching for both my chopsticks and my glass.
Final Thoughts | A Sake for Special Occasions
AKABU Gokujo no Kire is a luxurious sake that delivers on three fronts: gorgeous aroma, rich umami, and a clean finish. Rather than an everyday drink, this is a bottle to open on a special occasion or to share with someone important. Tasting it on the bar’s anniversary made the experience even more memorable.
Next time, I’d love to buy a bottle at full price and enjoy it slowly at home.
